New surgery, new treatment and Hello New York! To our Dear Friends, Family and Village of Support for Ariel: After a lengthy absence, Ariel published a new blog explaining why she's been "MIA.". Although pretty weak she was able to piece this together a bit each day and her nurses helped, too. Here is the link.wlmailhtml:{4FEA619A-57B2-4DC6-99B7-3BAD37475233}mid://00000073/!x-usc:" shape="rect" target="_blank">http://lilfixversuscancer.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html After many side effects to finish her drug trial, her adrenal cancer was admitting defeat!! YES! Before we could savor this, her very fragile immune system brought on new problems: a persistent kidney infection and an extremely rare new tumor, a sarcoma -growing into her abdominal wall. Though benign, it is dangerous, VERY painful and challenging to treat. Her blog describes what a low point this was for her, scary too & explains this strange tumor. She came through surgery well -- 80% of the tumor was removed. She will undergo radiation to treat the rest. Insurance requires her to leave Mayo Clinic today. She is transferring to a clinic on Martha's Vineyard, highly recommended by her doctors at Mayo. This clinic specializes in chronic illness by detoxifying and replenishing the body and accelerates restoring her immune system. Ariel's immunity is very fragile as a result of all her treatments and infections. This clinic is not covered by insurance, but we think it essential that she jump start her recovery with this to avoid more complications.AND THEN, after 4 long months, she returns home to NYC to her apt!! She will continue treatment outpatient and inpatient at NY Presbyterian. As you'd expect, she describes her journey with characteristic honesty, humor and grace. Here is her link to her latest blog. wlmailhtml:{4FEA619A-57B2-4DC6-99B7-3BAD37475233}mid://00000073/!x-usc:" shape="rect" target="_blank">http://lilfixversuscancer.blogspot.com/2012/06/herbie-fully-loaded-and-almost-fully.html She mentions her father in her latest blog and on Facebook. Gene took an unexpected turn and went into the hospital over Memorial Day weekend. He is finishing his 1st week in a good rehab center in Ft. Tryon/Washington Heights (northern Manhattan). He is responding to intensive OT, PT & Speech therapy. He should be home by end of June if all goes well. Hebrew names: Gene's is Yosef Zalman ben Oodle and Ariel's is Ariel Ita Tova bat Rona Rachel. We appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers and many gestures of support for Ariel and family. Truly a community of compassion and warmth and healing energy.
