EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NEW YORK CITY

Women’s Initiative for Self Employment is seeking a dynamic leader to launch our first New York office.  Founded in 1988, Women’s Initiative is the nation’s largest microenterprise training organization.  This highly successful, replicated model boasts tremendous results over time and is just what New York City needs to address the unemployment and economic inequity in New York communities.  Our vision is that every woman will know that she has the power to build assets, to be safe and to achieve prosperity. We are at an exciting point in our evolution as we expand to become a national organization, and are looking for a passionate individual to use our proven model to build a new office and achieve success for the women of New York City.

Position Overview
The Executive Director (ED) serves as the lead fundraiser, spokesperson, and partnership executive in the expansion of Women’s Initiative to New York.  The ED will employ major donor and development expertise to build strong relationships and elicit significant support among private and public funding sources, financial institutions, community organizations, and the media. 
The ideal candidate will have excelled in a start-up environment and will offer prowess in building the people, processes and programs that will uphold Women’s Initiative’s 23 year success in California. The leadership skills, aptitude and confidence will open new doors and build the brand as one of New York’s most successful non profits.

During both the pre- and post-launch phases of Women’s Initiative’s expansion, the ED will direct and support the New York Board of Directors including Board recruitment and successful achievement of Board fundraising goals.  Public speaking, brand building and positioning the organization in the most influential communities will be elements of a successful launch. The ED will oversee all management and program operations for metropolitan New York, and will hire and supervise staff, interns, volunteers and consultants who assist staff.

The ED must possess a high level of commitment to meeting the economic needs of lower income people, possess a sterling business and community reputation, and share our culture of fast-paced, self-directed innovation and results.  The ED should offer a highly nuanced understanding of institutional, government and private fundraising opportunities in New York and be able to elicit support from existing networks as well as cultivate new support. Women’s Initiative champions a highly ethical and committed work ethic, respect, trust, and excellent communication and collaboration.

Responsabilities
The Executive Director reports to the Chief Executive Officer and Regional Board and will be responsible for the following: 

Fundraising and Brand Building 
Raise and secure approximately $3 million in 2012 from diverse funding sources including government, foundations, corporations, small businesses, events and individuals – including Board members 
Recruit, develop and support a New York Board and an Advisory Council that is a strategic advantage in raising capital, building our brand and advancing our mission 
Design, produce and manage successful cultivation and other events that build the Women’s Initiative “brand” and that elicit championship and commitment 
Create a local fundraising system in coordination with national headquarters 
Seek opportunities to position Women’s Initiative as a leader in microenterprise in the New York market 
Program Management 

Lead the expansion plans to implement all successful program components, including training, business technical assistance, lending programs, and business and personal support services 
Hire, supervise, recruit and motivate staff, committee members, and volunteers, and promote development of their skills and leadership abilities 
Develop and maintain external relationships with women’s organizations, community agencies and groups, business assistance organizations, financing institutions and public agencies 
Build highly effective business partnerships, volunteer and inkind resources that propel our clients skills and business success 
Supervise day to day service delivery ensuring that all targets are successfully met 
Coordination with Corporate Office 

Acting as principle staff liaison between Women’s Initiative New York and CA headquarters 
Ensure that there are systems of reporting, fund development cultivation and overall strategy between Women’s Initiative New York and national headquarters 
Build culture among the New York team and ensure that they feel connected to the entire organization and its mission

Qualifications
The Executive Director should be a mature professional and have a minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience, including a background in nonprofit management, fundraising, entrepreneurship or economic development. Specific qualifications include: 
Expert relationship management skills, including experience in board and community relations, personnel supervision 
Proven fundraising experience including major donor cultivation, especially in metropolitan New York 
Leadership and management experience 
Experience working with diverse groups of people and lower income women 
Knowledge of the microenterprise field is desirable

A degree in nonprofit, public or business administration, community and or economic development or related field of interest is preferred, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
