The Office of Council Member Jumaane D. Williams is dedicated to creating a more just and equal city, combating all forms of discrimination, and advancing public policies that offer genuine opportunity to all New Yorkers, especially those who have been left out of our society’s prosperity. Council Member Williams, a community organizer at heart, encourages an organizing mentality in all the office’s endeavors. The office works to organize the 45th and empower communities to take action to improve the 45th. 

The Community Outreach Director should share these goals and should be eager to advance this agenda. In particular, the Community Outreach Director will work to enact the following in the 45th district. Not only will s/he respond to constituent concerns, but s/he will actively engage the community to fight for these issues. The Director should be an organizer at heart who’s ready to shake up the status quo. 

* Making the 45th District a safe place for all young people to learn and grow. 

* Creating and preserving safe, decent, affordable housing for all residents of the 45th district 

* Maintaining high-quality public education, child care, and youth programs that enable all kids of the 45th to succeed, with academic, athletic, and cultural programs that focus on human development, and a strong emphasis on parental involvement. 

* Developing strong, vibrant, diverse neighborhoods within the 45th district and providing for the physical, social, cultural and economic infrastructure that sustains healthy communities. 

* Advocating for criminal justice policies that emphasize prevention, alternatives-to-incarceration, and partnership with communities. 


Responsibilities 

Responsibilities include managing all aspects of projects related to the list above. Responsible for engaging local community groups and individuals interested in carrying out these goals and empowering them to take action in our community. Responsible for all community outreach including maintaining database of community contacts. Responsible for mobilizing volunteers to help carry out the mission of the office. 

The Director will write monthly reports regarding the office’s organizing activities to be made available to the public at community board meetings, civic associations, and other community meetings. 

Specific ongoing projects for which the Coordinator will be responsible: 

* Participatory Budgeting 
* Youth Anti-Violence Initiative 
* Flatbush Youth Court 

Experience and Requirements 

* Applicant must have at least 3 years experience an advocate whether in an elected official’s office or with some other service provider or local community organization. Applicant should have 3 years experience as an organizer. 

* Applicant must have at least 2 years management experience 

* The ideal candidate will have excellent oral and written communications skills, the ability to efficiently multi-task, and be able to function effectively in a fast-paced environment. 

* Applicants should be self-motivated, able to multi-task and have exceptional organizational skills. 

* Applicants must be very computer literate including the ability to use Microsoft office suite, particularly Outlook, Excel and Word. The applicant must be able to learn new software for managing constituent cases. 

* Applicant must be able to work energetically for the entire assigned shift; the shift does not end until all duties are completed for the day. Candidate must be willing to work a flexible schedule and some late nights. 

* Applicant must always be in position and ready to work promptly at the start of each scheduled shift.  Excessive tardiness or truancy is disruptive to client service and can not be accommodated for this position. 

* Applicant must carry out all duties in a professional and courteous manner and remain respectful and polite in speech, tone, and actions under all circumstances 

* Applicant will encounter stressful situations including but not limited to emotional clients, local/State/National emergencies, and managing multiple priorities at once. All staff members must be able to manage stress in order to carry out the duties of the job in a calm and professional manner.
