Position Summary

The external relations associate is responsible for managing the youth, children, workforce, and poverty portfolio, which requires developing and strengthening relationships between UJA-Federation and our network agencies and the government.

The external relations associate will support the director with research, writing, and representation of UJA-Federation at meetings with agencies and coalitions both in and out of UJA-Federation's network. He or she will represent UJA-Federation at meetings as appropriate and necessary.

Major Responsibilities

(75%) Advocate for the health and human service needs of the New York Jewish community and the network of UJA-Federation agencies

Advocate for critical city funding by coordinating meetings with elected officials, participating in advocacy coalitions, testify at City Council hearings and produce persuasive written materials.
Cultivate and interact with high-level professionals from the government and elected officials, and the voluntary human-service system.
Monitor City Council budgetary and legislative processes and ascertain impact advocate for changes as necessary.
Troubleshoot and provide strategy for UJA-Federation agencies regarding funding, contractual and legislative issues.
(15%) Provide UJA-Federation internal support

Promote the importance of external relations within UJA-Federation and the network of agencies.
Assist the director in staffing relevant UJA-Federation events, including Government Relations events for agency Executive Directors, as well as Legislative Breakfasts and key donor engagement political events.
Help develop and coordinate special initiatives on community issues, such as census counting for "hidden" populations, grants to agencies
File monthly and annual Lobbying Reports for UJA on behalf of the Government Relations Department.
(10%) Promote community and interfaith awareness and dialogue

Liaison to Jewish Community Relations Council's (JCRC) division responsible for
intergroup relations, developing and carrying out coordinated outreach and relationship- building efforts with City Council and city agencies.
Coordinate, plan and attend cultural events, community and interfaith meetings, and attend educational seminars on multicultural and religious issues.
Additional assignments as assigned by the manager.

Qualifications and Education

Bachelor's degree, with minimum two years' experience in politics, external relations, or related activity
Demonstrated working knowledge of external relations; city government or government affairs experience preferred
Sophistication to publicly represent UJA-Federation within the context of its mission; strong team player to collaboratively advocate and solve problems
Superior written and oral skills, and ability to communicate effectively to professional peers, top management, and lay leaders; proficiency in Excel
