Summer/Fall 2011 Internship Opportunities 
Office of Council Member Jumaane D. Williams 
4517 Avenue D 
Brooklyn, NY 11203 

Internships available at the Office of Council Member Jumaane D. Williams, in the Constituency Affairs Unit, the Media Relations Unit, the Legislative Office and the Community Organizing Unit. The ideal candidate will have an in interest in government/public service, the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, exceptional organizational skills and the ability to efficiently multi-task. 

Responsibilities for the Constituency Affairs Unit may include: 
• Representing the office at community meetings and events 
• Briefing the Council Member and staff on complex constituent cases 
• Contacting agencies on behalf of constituents 
• Conducting follow-up phone calls with constituents 
• Drafting constituent correspondence letters 
• Logging all requests into database and maintain up-to-date files on all cases 

Responsibilities for the Media Relations Unit may include: 
• Performing research for stories and press events 
• Writing and editing press materials 
• Coordinating the management of media databases 
• Tracking local and citywide media for the Council Member and staff 
• Managing the Council Member's website and social media presence 
• Providing creative assistance 
• Staffing the Council Member's press events and media availabilities 

Responsibilities for the Legislative Office may include: 
• Research and writing legislation summaries 
• Assisting with constituent services 
• Assisting with organizing and promoting community programs 
• Attending meetings and taking notes 
• Communicating with various city agencies and nonprofit organizations 
• Clerical duties 


Responsibilities for the Community Organizing Unit may include: 
• Organizing the community around important issues in the district 
• Staffing the Council Member's events 
• Helping with event planning and management 
• Contacting local businesses, community organizations and City agencies for support on local initiatives 
• Outreach to block associations, schools and other local community groups to participate in office events or programs

In your cover letter, let us know why you are interested in this particular internship and how it fits into your career goals. Also, indicate which of these units interests you most. Please note that all internships are unpaid, but the office will work with schools that offer course credit for internships.
