THE ORGANIZATION
Founded in 1844, the Correctional Association of New York (CA) is one of only two private organizations in the country—and the only one in New York—with legislative authority to inspect and report on conditions in state prisons. Through a nationally-recognized model combining independent prison oversight, community organizing, coalition building, public education, policy advocacy, and leadership development, the CA works to create a more fair, efficient and humane criminal justice system and a safer, more just society. The Correctional Association of New York operates four principal projects—Juvenile Justice, Prison Visiting, Public Policy, and Women in Prison.
 
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Director of Finance reports directly to the Executive Director, works closely with the Directors of Development and Operations and the Board Treasurer, and is responsible for managing all financial functions in a not-for-profit work environment. This includes preparing budgets; conducting fiscal analysis and preparing financial reports; maintaining an effective system of accounting; managing the payroll system and tracking investment portfolio activity.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Financial and Strategic Planning
Develops multi-year strategic business and financial recommendations for Executive Staff and Board of Directors.
Prepares Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow projections.
 
Budgeting
Prepares budgets for Funders, Senior Staff, and Board of Directors, and a small number of government contracts.
Ensures accurate upload of budgets into the FUND EZ software system.
Works with Executive Director and Senior Staff to identify program needs, staffing plans, and funding feasibility in preparation of annual operating budgets.
 
Financial Control and Management
Develops and implements fiscal management systems, policies and procedures to ensure financial accountability, solvency, and appropriate disposition of allocated funds.
Ensures timely submission of financial reports to Funders, Government Agencies, Senior Staff, and Board of Directors.
Ensures that all financial activity is included in Fund EZ in accordance with the chart of accounts, enabling the production of accurate, timely and transparent financial statements and analyses.
Manages audit and audit preparation to achieve a clean audit: prepares audit book, reconciles all relevant accounts and audit reports, works directly with auditors, and take corrective action on audit findings to ensure compliance.
Ensures that the terms of hire and salary changes are made in accordance with the approved personnel budgets.
Reviews and administers the fiscal component of government contracts.
Manages and maintains cash controls.
Monitors department spending and recommends corrective actions as necessary.
Tracks investments and reserves and reports to investment committee of the Board
Reconciles general ledger accounts.
Works with the Executive Director and Director of Operations to manage and coordinate payroll, various components of human resources, and administration of employee benefits.
 
Additional Duties
Manages the payroll system and works with the Director of Operations to ensure all staff are paid on a timely and accurate basis.
Provides financial advice and assistance on human resource planning.
Attends regular board and staff meetings and provides financial updates for the organization.
Acts as primary financial liaison with staff and Board of Directors.
Ensures that the agency’s General Liability Insurance, Directors and Officers insurance and all other insurance necessary is maintained in effect and at appropriate levels of coverage.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualified candidates must have a MBA or CPA with Masters from an accredited program and a minimum of five years of not-for-profit senior finance management experience with a high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.  Advanced computer skills including the ability to operate and manage computerized financials through Excel and Fund EZ accounting software, payroll spreadsheet and Microsoft Office are a must.  The position also requires: demonstrated poise and discretion; the ability to work collaboratively and independently and interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization; strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines; decision making, time management and planning skills; advanced analytical and innovative problem solving abilities; demonstrated attention to detail and high level of accuracy; effective written, oral and listening communication skills. 
 
Candidate should be honest and trustworthy, respectful, flexible, demonstrate sound work ethics, and possess cultural awareness and sensitivity.
 
The candidate should have proficient knowledge and experience in the following areas:
GAAP accounting principles applicable to not-for-profit organizations
Grants and contracts management
Accounts payable and accounts receivables
Fund Accounting
Preparation of internal and external financial statements

Compensation includes a starting salary commensurate with experience plus excellent benefits.
