[Fredslist] Employee guidelines

I have a physician that has never established employee guidelines for
hiring, discipline, or firing.  He's uncomfortable with it and is asking me
for guidance.  While I told him some of this was based upon his sense of
right and wrong, and some was based upon practicing in a highly regulated
industry, is there anyone that can give me sample guidelines to determine
the boundaries between oral discussion, written discipline, and outright
firing to assist him with where to draw the lines?
