[Fredslist] PBS Documentary on Fania Heller

The documentary is being shown nationwide on all PBS stations through the
beginning of May culminating with Holocaust Remembrance Day.

 

Fanya Heller, her parents and brother, survived the war because she was
hidden first by a Polish policeman who took her as a lover and then by a
Polish peasant who was so illiterate, he could only make an X for his
signature. 

 

Nowadays, at her own expense, she travels to minority communities and talks
to the young people about not giving up on themselves and recognizing that
there is light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.  Many of them identify
with her because they too have experienced sexual abuse, hunger and
dysfunctional families.

 

She was recently feted by the NYC Council and received an award from Speaker
Quinn during Women's Month. Fanya's film will be re-shown in New York  on
April 25 at 10:00 pm and April 30 at 5:00 pm, both on Channel 21 (WLIW).
