The phrase "larger-than-life" is often misused, but is perfect to describe the great deceased actor and comedian Zero Mostel. Who can forget his over-the-top performance as Max Bialystock in the film "The Producers" (a film I watch at least once a year), or as Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof", or other marvelous performances in plays, musicals and films? For a really fun and fine piece of theater go to see "Zero Hour", a play by Jim Brochu, who also stars in it, at the Daryl Roth Theatre (103 E. 15th St.). Alternating between hilarity and seriousness, this monologue captures the manic-humor and deep anger of Mostel, who was one of those whose careers was damaged by the McCarthy led House Un-American Activities Committee, and he maintained a lifelong hatred of Jerome Robbins for having "named names". In spite of this, he refers to Robbins as a "genius" and appeared triumphantly in the Robbins-directed “Fiddler on the Roof”, as well as Pseudolus in "A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum" a musical whose demise was averted by Robbins play-saving direction.

It's a great couple of hours of theater and I guarantee you will laugh, but maybe cry a little, as well. For us seniors it's also wonderful that it's on TDF.
