I am doing my own set-up today because my blog is a little bit unusual.  You can read Tracy Giuffre's substitute blog here http://www.gothamnetworking.com/blogs/posting.php?bid=1461

Through the magic of facebook I recently connected with a woman I was friends with in high school.  She had told a story about how she had participated in a bone marrow drive to try and find a match for a girl who was dying of leukemia.  I found her story to be incredible, and more importantly, I thought that people should know how, though lengthy, the process was not painful or dangerous in exchange for literally and single handedly being responsible for saving someone's life.  I had a really good spoof on President Obama's first pitch before the Nationals' Opening Day game, but I truly thought this was slightly more important than sharing my twisted and unique sense of humor.

Like everything in life, bone marrow donations are a "numbers game".  I believe Tracy says that less than 1% of all people who are in need turn out to find a match.  That being said, if we could double or triple the number of people who get tested, perhaps even increase it ten fold or one hundred fold, think about how many people we could be saving by simply joining together as a community.  It really wouldn't cost us one extra dollar, wouldn't require any additional medical break-throughs and wouldn't involve very much personal sacrifice.

If a building was on fire, and there was a young child in the building who needed to be saved, I'd like to think I would run into that burning building.  Yet, I haven't done this.  If a young child was sitting in a bed dying of leukemia, there are a lot of things we would do to help that child simply feel better that involve donating time, energy and money.  Yet many of us don't do this.  Doesn't seem to make much sense does it.  It is easy to get too caught up in the commitments of our daily lives to focus on something so "small".  If the process bothers you, no one should think less of you for not becoming involved.  If you are like me however, and just haven't done it because you haven't been motivated to, then maybe this blog can make your personal opportunity to save someone's life become a reality.  This is something very "small" that in a larger group could become something truly "big".

I would like to implore everyone, to not just to do what my wife and I are doing by committing to donating a Q-tip of spit from our cheek, but to also promoting different opportunities to everyone we know to get registered so than we can save more lives.

Thank you for listening to my "set-up"

"Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed
of ignorance and the gospel of envy. The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings. The inherent vice of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries. Some regard private enterprise as if it were a predatory tiger to be shot. Others look upon it as a cow to be milked. Few realize it for what it is - the horse that pulls the whole cart."

Winston Churchill

"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty. "

John F. Kennedy
