[Fredslist] I never would have guessed department

In the "I never would have guessed department of life" here is a green
friendly tip from

Real Simple Magazine

Clean your car at home or at a car wash?

The answer is at a car wash. Why?

It is more earth friendly to wash a car.

When you scrub your car at home you also pollute your water with motor oil,
antifreeze, and gasoline that your car picked up

on the road. It runs down the driveway and into your storm drains, which is
emptied into local rivers, and creeks. This runoff

coats gills of fish and tad poles in these small waterways, suffocating
them. Detergents also cause harm.

On the other hand the runoff produced by an automatic car wash, or even a
guy that washes your car at a gas station, is subject to waste-water laws.

That means either it goes to the local sewage-treatment plant, where it is
filtered and cleaned, just like the water from your pipes at home, or it's
recycled on-site by the business.

The leftover gunk is disposed of at a landfill. Automatic car washes also
tend to use less water than at home with a regular garden hose.

To go one better than the Real Simple article, find a oil lube place that
also gives car washes at no additional cost and honors the offer even if you
don't take the wash on the same day.

I have an honest one at the corner of Newbridge Rd and Jerusalem Avenue in
North Bellmore for those that live near by.
