The Science of Speaking 

Master and Commander of the Pause  

Do your words go by like a speeding bullet? If you speak too quickly the
message won't land. 

Myth: Most speakers talk too fast.

Reality: Most speakers don't pause.  

Here's a voice spectogram of rushed speech.  When I work with a speedtalker
this is what their speech pattern looks like. They don't come up for air.
Their speech is one run-on sentence.   The result? They sound nervous and
out of control.

Here's what their speech pattern looks like after coaching. The black spaces
are the pauses. Slowing down the words isn't effective. Pausing works!
Pausing between thoughts allows the brain time to process your message. Now
the message lands. Now the audience remembers your point. Now you can
inspire and influence. But it takes confidence to use silence.
