There is a start and finish to all things. It seems that politics hasn't
changed in hundreds if not thousands of years......

On July 4, 1850, the weather in Washington was hot and rather humid. Taylor
was there to preside over ceremonies at the laying of the cornerstone of
the
Washington Monument.

Other famous people who died on July 4th:

1831 - James Monroe, 5th President of the United States (b. 1758)
1997 - Charles Kuralt, American television presenter (b. 1934)
2003 - Barry White, American singer (b. 1944)

And how about some famous births:
1816 - Hiram Walker, American grocer and distiller (d. 1899) I'll drink to
that!
1872 - Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the United States (d. 1933)
1881 - Ulysses S. Grant III, American soldier (d. 1968)
1883 - Rube Goldberg, American cartoonist (d. 1970)
1911 - Mitch Miller, American entertainer
1927 - Gina Lollobrigida, Italian actress
1927 - Neil Simon, American playwright
1943 - Geraldo Rivera, American reporter- NOW I THINK HE MADE THIS UP LIKE
THE REST OF HIS STORIES.
1971 - Koko, sign-language gorilla

How could President Taylor have officiated at the Washington momument, as
the monument wasn't completed until after the civil war (in which his great

grandson fought for Virginia)? The reason there are two different shades
of
stone on the monument is specifically because construction (i.e. erection)
was halted during the 4-year conflict.
