Dear Gothamite,

If you are passionate about great modern art and first class food, we have
a treat in store for you. On Saturday, August 4th, the Hudson Valley
Chapter of Gotham is hosting a most unusual outing aimed at those with rare
taste and taste buds. You'll have a great chance for some in-depth
networking! It will be a tremendous day and all for only $150.

We'll begin our day at the renown DIA gallery in Beacon, NY. Here's some
information about this unique museum:

DIA: Beacon - In May 2003, Dia opened Dia:Beacon, Riggio Galleries, a
museum to house its renowned but rarely seen permanent collection comprised
of major works of art from the 1960s to the present. Located on the Hudson
River in Beacon, New York, Dia:Beacon occupies a nearly 300,000-square-foot
historic printing factory. The museum is named in honor of Louise and
Leonard Riggio for their extraordinary generosity, which has made possible
the realization of this museum dedicated to Dia's collection.

Since its founding in 1974, Dia has been dedicated to supporting individual
artists and to providing long-term, in-depth presentations of their art.
The Beacon museum’s expansive galleries have been specifically designed for
the display of the artworks to which Dia is committed, many of which,
because of their character or scale, could not be easily accommodated by
more conventional museums.

Works installed at the museum range from Andy Warhol's 1978 Shadows (a
single work comprising multiple canvases); to three of Richard Serra's
monumental sculptures in the Torqued Ellipses; "monuments" for V. Tatlin, a
series of fluorescent light works by Dan Flavin; several mixed-media
installations by Joseph Beuys and Agnes Martin’s 1999 paintings Innocent
Love, among others. Each artist’s work is displayed in a dedicated gallery
or galleries: in many cases these presentations were created in
collaboration with the artists themselves.

We'll have lunch there at DIA and then in the afternoon we'll caravan
across the river to Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY to visit another remarkable
museum of modern art - Storm King Art Center.
* * *
Storm King Art Center is a museum that celebrates the relationship between
sculpture and nature. Five hundred acres of landscaped lawns, fields and
woodlands provide the site for postwar sculptures by internationally
renowned artists. At Storm King, the exhibition space is defined by sky and
land. Unencumbered by walls, the subtly created flow of space is punctuated
by modern sculpture. The grounds are surrounded by the undulating profiles
of the Hudson Highlands, a dramatic panorama integral to the viewing
experience. The sculptures are affected by changes in light and weather, so
no two visits are the same.

The focus of Storm King Art Center's distinguished permanent collection of
American and European modern sculpture is on large abstract welded steel
works from the 1960's to the present, although figurative works are also on
view. A core group of thirteen sculptures by David Smith anchor a
collection of outstanding works by modern masters such as Alexander Calder,
Henry Moore, and Louise Nevelson. The Art Center also has superb works by
many other contemporary sculptors, including Magdalena Abakanowicz, Alice
Aycock, Mark di Suvero, Robert Grosvenor, Nam June Paik, and Ursula von
Rydingsvard.

We'll end the day with a gourmet meal at the Culinary Instutite of America
in Hyde Park, NY where we have a reserved room in the famous "American
Bounty" restaurant. "The wealth and diversity of America's cultural
heritage is brought to life by the imaginative cuisine of this
student-staffed restaurant located in the CIA's main grand building, Roth
Hall. A recipient of the prestigious Ivy Award, the Bounty features
regional specialties prepared with ingredients harvested from the riches of
the Hudson River Valley."
