For Gothamites who are independent contractor, the Freelancer's Union
mailing list is a great source of information. Here are two items from the
latest e-mail that will be of interest to us.

Save the date: NY City Council hearing on freelancers and independent
workers, April 16th, 10 a.m.

This April, join us at City Hall for a NY City Council hearing on ³Improving
Economic Conditions for Freelancers and Independent Workers.² City leaders
are beginning to recognize that freelancers are an important part of the
city's economy. Testimony will cover health insurance affordability, changes
to unfair taxes, unemployment insurance, and recourse when clients don¹t
pay. 

NYC Comptroller spotlights freelancers

In January, New York City Comptroller Bill Thompson released a report on
freelancers and the self-employed, indicating that job growth in this sector
is driving the City¹s economy. Thompson is really taking the lead in
recognizing freelancers.
