[Fredslist] Foe considerartion: re: Ellin Yassky in Prague/kladno.

Shortly before take off for Prague today (yesterday) I received an email saying that they had just found a Survivor who had lived in Kladno until his deportation at age 16 and who was living in an old age home in Prague. A few hours after touching down and entering this fairtale city covered in thick frost (20k F),, I was having tea with Mr. Petr Herrmann, an 82-year-old engineer who took the train from his "retirement home" to come meet me and let me interview him. The thrust- that he has struggled with why he is the soul survivor of his 26 family members. Because of this research, and a similar situation that ocurred in 1997, he has come to believe that he survived to tell what happened. After all these years, he has been able to set this pain to rest because he received unexpected calls from strangers asking for help and to hear his story. We have found each other and made unparalleled changes in each others' lives. He will come back to Kladno on Christmas Day with the President of the Prague Jewish community to share in our day of joint research and celebration in getting to know each other.

The message here? In this next new year, let us all be blessed with a positive change in another person's life (especially a stranger) because we took the time to reach out and take a chance. Mr. Herrmann could have been a lonely old an in an old-age home, just desparate for a conversation. Intead, he made a difference in my life.  Missing this opportunity, as jeti-lagged as I was, would have been an unforgiveable break in a chain of knowledge.
