DEMOCRACY 101: THE YOUTH CIVICS PROJECT 

I am currently recruiting high school juniors and seniors for Democracy 101: The Youth Civics Project, a civics engagement program hosted by my office. If you know someone who may be interested in signing up for this program, please forward them this email. I have developed the Youth Civics Project to supplement students' high school civics education and give them first-hand insight to the legislative process. Participating high school juniors and seniors will learn legislative procedure and are provided with an overview of critical issues facing the state. A wide-range of interactive activities, debates and lectures are employed by myself, my staff and other guest lecturers to engage students in the workings of the legislature. The program culminates in a Mock State Senate at the City Hall Council Chambers, where students assume the roles of State Senators and debate actual bills of their choosing. 

All students who complete the civics curriculum and participate in the Mock State Senate receive a Senate Proclamation in recognition of their achievement. Those who complete the program will be eligible to receive letters of recommendation to colleges or other institutions. Finally, many civics alumni have gone on to participate in my office's internship program. 

The program will meet seven times throughout the 2006-2007 school year and I expect all who sign up to attend each session. Below is the schedule of meetings for the 2006-2007 civics project: 

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006, 4:30-7pm 

Thursday, January 18th, 2007, 4:30-7pm 

Thursday, February 15th, 2007, 4:30-7pm 

Thursday, March 15th, 2007, 4:30-7pm 

Thursday, April 19th, 2007, 4:30-7pm 

Mock State Senate: Sunday, April 22nd, 2007, 12:30-4pm (tentative) 

All sessions will take place at the Robert Wagner Middle School, which is located at 220 East 76th Street (between Second and Third Avenues.)
