Since the battle for immigration reform widely affects all Americans, our
office will be coming out with several updates regarding immigration
legislation. This is the first update our office has drafted, which is a
brief summary of President Bush's address to the nation Monday night.

PRESIDENT BUSH SPEECH ON IMMIGRATION

On Monday, May 15, 2006, President Bush delivered a nationally televised
speech on immigration. The President called for more enforcement along the
border with Mexico, including the deployment of several thousand National
Guard troops. The President also called for a comprehensive approach to
immigration reform which includes biometric work cards, sanctions against
employers who hire undocumented workers, a guest worker program, and a
legalization program for undocumented workers who have roots in this
country. For a comprehensive summary/fact sheet of this speech, please
visit the White House's website at
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/05/20060515-7.html

With the President making a nationally televised speech solely on this
issue, it seems that new legislation may be enacted very soon. Of course,
this will require both the House and the Senate to compromise and agree upon
a comprehensive bill, and with their current positions being completely
opposite from each other, it's very difficult to say when this will happen
and exactly what the bill will include. This legislation relates primarily
to illegal immigration.

We will keep you updated with further developments.
