Hello,

At today's Gotham - Hudson Valley Chapter meeting, we discussed the difference between Gotham and most other networking organizations. With BNI, for instance, the focus is all on lead generation. You bring leads or you're out of the net. This results in mostly shallow, unqualified leads with weak referrals from the lead giver. 

Gotham, on the other hand, is about relationships. You make friends first, socialize and really get to know people as people, then when a business need arises you think of your friend first. The pressure's off, pass the butter please. 

We also discussed who might be good prospects for the Hudson Valley Chapter - - it still seems to me that the tourism industry should be a good fit. Hotels, wineries, galleries, B&B's, etc. should all be interested in making more friends - especially in the greater metro area. This is a real opportunity to get to know successful, well-connected New Yorkers who could easily drive up to our area.  This same opportunity is there for many other professions, of course.

Fredslist is another Gotham tool that newcomers may not appreciate right away. It's not meant to get you business as much as to give you a chance to do someone a favor. It's the best expression of our motto: "It's better to give than to receive, but what goes around comes around." Be a friend and be patient and your friends will remember you when business time comes. Fredslist is our biggest relationship builder along with Riding the Circuit. 

I hope you'll attend our next meeting (and many thereafter) and bring a guest or two. . .
