[Fredslist] SSN change?

Greetings Gotham,

    I¹m hoping someone can provide some guidance:

   We recently discovered that a fine young man who is a very close family
friend may have had is SSN hijacked by his father from whom he is
semi-estranged. This young man is 20 years old and a Jr. in his family---he
has the exact same name as his father. We discovered through a reilable
source that his father has apparently begun applying for credit cards and
perhaps even a mortgage using the SSN of his son.  The father¹s credit, from
what I surmise, is horrible.

 The young man doesn¹t know this has occurred yet---he¹s currently in the US
Marines serving in Iraq which complicates the issue. It is doubtful that he
would want to press charges against his father, regardless of the status of
their relationship.

I would like to be able to provide him with steps to resolve the problem...

Any advice?
