Never Would I Ever
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Now, this is a blast from the past.   How many of you out there grew up with plastic slipcovers on the living room couch?    If you are there with me, remember the whooshing noise they made when you sat down?  How about, what it felt like to stand up from the hot cushions in the heat of the summer?  Or, how the sharp edges on the corners felt just

The First Time Back
Posted By : Nancy Schess

We would have ventured back to a movie theatre ages ago but frankly, just did not have the opportunity.  OK, in truth, maybe we became a little lazy during the pandemic. There is something very relaxing about pajamas, a glass of wine and a movie or binge worthy show on my big screen TV. And, during the pandemic, the choices became very plentiful.

Our Visit to Loxton Cellars
Posted By : Nancy Schess

One of the highlights of our recent trip to northern California was a luxurious day spent in Sonoma.  My daughter planned the whole excursion for the four of us – complete with door to door service and a scrumptious midday lunch.  Next time I see you, I encourage you to ask to see pictures.   One of the vineyards we visited was Loxton Cellars where

Family
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Anyone who knows me at all, knows how important family is in my world.  It is not just about those in my immediate circle.  I appreciate all family – mine and everyone else’s too.   I also appreciate being a student of family.  I am always taken with how our ancestors came to be together from generations before.   I will tell a story – and one that

Off Off Off and More Off Broadway

And fantastic!   We are great fans of local theatre.  Frankly, we are great fans of theatre anywhere.  Make it a musical, and we are in heaven. I can pretty much guarantee that we are the singing and swaying couple at most musicals.   Recently we went to see A Chorus Line at The Argyle Theatre in Babylon, Long Island.  What a wonderful performance.

What Would You Do?
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Recently, I was privy to the following dilemma.   A local mom complained that she sends birthday cards gifts to her grown children, their spouses and her grandchildren every year but over the last number of years there has been no sign of any reciprocation.  What should she do was the question of the moment?   The universal opinion was to keep send

Time for a Good Read
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I am ready – and if I’m lucky, maybe I will have a little time to read a book.   I’m afraid I have to admit I don’t remember the last time I had enough free time to read a whole book.  I love to read, but these days tend to read articles, short pieces, magazines, that sort of thing.  I am itching now for a good book.   And so, its survey time!   W

How Research Has Changed
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I grew up with an encyclopedia proudly displayed on the shelves in our den.  The World Book – it was olive green with navy blue borders.   When a homework assignment needed some information, we turned right to the encyclopedia.   During law school, we learned computerized legal research.  Yes, learned.  Special classes – dedicated terminals.  Any l

The In-Office Experience
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Coming out of the pandemic (although I’m not sure we ever really have come out of the pandemic), I’ve learned that I really like my time in the office.  The hustle, bustle and plain social nature of being around a group is just plain fun.      I am convinced I learn more in the office as well – even at this stage in my career.  There is no substi

Snow, At Last
Posted By : Nancy Schess

When my kids were in nursery school, they were taught to sleep with a spoon under their pillow to bring on a snowy day.  As I write this Monday evening, I have decided to sleep with a spoon under my pillow.   It has been so long since we have seen any real measure of snow, two years or so if the reporting today had been correct.   I miss it.  There

Strolling
Posted By : Nancy Schess

It seemed like a fun idea, and it was.   Saturday night we went to see an 80’s cover band.  Two full hours of rocking to a playlist that took us back to a very different time – even back to the 70s.   A little Bon Jovi, Journey, Van Halen, Culture Club. And then a full eight and one half minutes of Paradise by the Dashboard Light.   Were we singing

Blast From the Past
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to create a “half glass full” occasion.  My son and his girlfriend just returned from a (fantastic) trip to Lima.  The problem was that their flight was cancelled and so they had to rebook at the last minute.  Add to the story – they live in Lynchburg VA.   As my luck would have it, the best flight they could find t

And Then There Was Snow
Posted By : Nancy Schess

When my children were in nursery school, they were taught a special trick when the forecast was snow.  If you slept with a spoon under your pillow, you were sure to wake up with the streets blanketed in a sea of white – which surely signaled either a delayed start to the school day or even one of those prized snow days.   It has been so long since

A New Gadget
Posted By : Nancy Schess

It is truly ReMarkable.   I like new gadgets.   With full disclosure, sometimes I buy a new gadget just because it is  new and I’m curious.  That is what happened recently but I have been pleasantly surprised.   Has anyone indulged in a ReMarkable tablet?  This was my most recent splurge.  In short, this is an electronic notebook that really feels
