Synopsis

DISCUSSION WITH AUTHOR, JOJO MOYES: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19TH AT 1:00 P.M.

A young working class girl becomes a caretaker for a wealthy, somewhat abrupt quadriplegic man.  Their story is equal parts love, adventure and eternal hope. The reader is presented with controversial questions about one's autonomy about living and dying, and who is entitled to make those decisions.

Just finished reading this incredible story, so moving and full of surprises. I was riveted to the last page. So many topics are twirling in my head....are we really in control of our lives? Love how the characters fall in love with each other and yet so opposite, how they interact and change. I'm looking forward to our conversation with Jojo Moyes tomorrow.

How do you personally view the idea of a person choosing euthanasia in Will's circumstances?

The beauty of the story is you get the perspective of euthanasia from both sides, the person in pain and the people left behind. What's also interesting is the moral issue is played down as is the cost of keeping someone alive.

    A comment from Judy Mauer:
I thought this book was amazing - it stayed with me for a very long time.
The ending was perfect - and very thought provoking.
I thought the evolution of their relationship was stunning.
I have recommended this book many times.

I really enjoyed the journey your created the unfolding of their relationship...I found myself surprised yet drawn in further and further. I noticed you use clothing a lot to define many of the characters...Mrs. Traynor in "sophisticated clothing vs Louisa in brightly colored mismatched wear.

I was very hesitant at first to read this book because the subject was upsetting and somewhat close to home because my father is very angry and frustrated being dependent on others for his care. I read this book because of the book club and was so happy I did. Definitely emotional and conflicting but I couldn't put it down. When I finished the book I immediately purchased The Last Letter from Your Lover and I am now wrapped up in this story. Thank you very much and I have recommended both books to friends and family.

What was the genisis of your creating the scenario of a working class young woman falling in love with a man in Will's difficult circumstances?

Has anyone ever mentioned that the plot line is somewhat similar to the movie The Intouchables? While there are many differences, there are also some unmistakable similarities. Also, while I don't want to spoil the ending, I have to say that I was dismayed by the outcome. I understand it was a realistic ending, but I was truly rooting for their relationship to overcome Will's position on euthanasia.

Actually I thought the ending added tremendously to the books power & depth. We are alone, we can & do love unconditionally but our partners are independent and if we love unconditionally we have to accept their choices.
