A New Normal?
A New Normal?

As I watched the coverage of Tuesday’s terrorist attack and the reality set in, two recurring thoughts came to mind. I remembered our walks along that stretch of the path along West Street and I remembered an off-Broadway play that we saw many years ago. I don’t remember the name. The play, set in Israel, depicted scenes of everyday life — a visit with friends, dinner in a restaurant, coffee in a cafe. Each scene was abruptly interrupted by an explosion — a terrorist attack. The suddenness of the attacks and their intrusion into everyday life was quickly replaced by the next scene - a return to everyday life. Is this the inevitable cycle that we face? ...

If we gain more compassion for those in the Middle East who have lived with the constant threat of bombs, etc that would be a positive thing. I'm going to go on living my life with all the hope I can muster, giving in to fear never did anyone any good.

It's all so sad; however, though difficult, we can't give into fear and stop living.

We must fight to defend against a reality which exists now for millions of people around the world. Fred, Cayce and Liz each are correct. I continue to cringe every morning when my radio wakes me--fearful of what the news of the morning will bring.

I find your Blog most interesting. At first I thought 'We Americans" who were born and natives of this great country will never accept this as "The New Norm".... But then I came to realize "That Some Us Already Have" and I'm sorry to say that You & I are guilty as charged. Just think back to our Gotham Networking, Dual Group Lunch, on Wednesday, the day after a Terrorist killed 8 innocent people and injured 16 others. In the same City we were having Lunch with fellow Gothamite's (as the set in your play), and we went about a Normal Gotham Networking Meeting. With three Chairpersons present, as well as Our Tribal Leader and 20+ Gothamite's, we went about our business as Normal and did not even take a "Moment of Silence" for these poor souls who were killed, those injured and their families and close friends. In fact it wasn't until about an hour into the meeting that we even tabled "The Terrorist Attack". So Ben, I thank you for vividly introducing me to the person I have become....

I had similar thoughts. When the news of it first broke, I checked on loved ones in the City. Once I knew everyone was ok, I just went back to working. I don't think I even took a moment to think about that NY had just been attacked and what that means.

My mom was worried about the proximity to where my son and nephew work. Trying to live normally answers the terror mongers best.
